Construction of SISGrass stitched hybrid turf stadium pitch

Newcastle United FC, St James’ Park Stadium

Project summary

New SISGrass hybrid turf stadium pitch at the iconic home of the Magpies

The following scope of works was carried out in accordance with the specification produced by the STRI:

  • Removal and disposal of 200mm depth of existing pitch profile, comprising original fibre surface
  • Re-grade existing lower sand profile, check original drainage slits and re-establish original pitch levels, import and spread new 100mm layer of sand and 100mm depth of rootzone
  • Installation of new irrigation system to pitch
  • Installation of amendments, preparation and seeding of pitch surface
  • Installation of SISGrass hybrid pitch reinforcement system.

We are extremely happy with the pitch – it’s played really well. It’s probably the best the pitch has been since I’ve been here, and I know it hasn’t gone through the winter period yet but at the same stage in the last 15 years it hasn’t been any better. We did the job at very short notice. We decided to put the SISGrass pitch in with only four weeks’ notice, so considering the time they had to get everything organised and put in place I couldn’t fault them.
