Project summary
Improvements to one of Bristol's top golf courses
Long Ashton Golf Club contracted golf construction specialists MJ Abbott to carry out an ambitious greens reconstruction project to cement the Club’s reputation as the highest quality golf course in the Bristol area.
The project saw the complete reconstruction of 14 greens, comprising:
- removal of the existing turf and careful storage for re-laying;
- excavation of 400mm of the existing soil, clay and rock, and shaping to maintain the existing green contours;
- installation of a new herringbone drainage system;
- laying a 100mm gravel carpet;
- laying a 300mm layer of sand-rich rootzone;
- re-laying the original turf;
- renewal of the irrigation around the greens where necessary; and
- reinstatement of all disturbance to the course.
MJ Abbott was selected following a competitive tender process, having demonstrated that it was able to devote the necessary resources to the project to complete the contract within the Club’s required tight timescale of just five weeks from start to finish, causing the minimum possible disruption to play.
The project was completed in early November 2013.
