Construction of iconic Ryder Cup course
The course was designed by European Golf Design.
MJ Abbott secured the contract through the submission of a competitive tender and interview process.
The project involved the following scope of works:
- Site set up including pollution and traffic management
- Site clearance including removal of hedges
- 50,000m³ of cut and fill earthworks to create features complete with topsoil re-spread and sand amelioration
- Construction of greens, tees, fairways and bunker complexes
- Construction of tented village platforms and spectator viewing galleries
- Preparation and seeding of 70ha of playing areas and 1ha of hydroseeding steep slopes
- Installation of primary drainage to golf areas and deep carrier drainage throughout the site
- Fully automatic irrigation system covering all golf areas including new pump station and control system
- Design and construction of a new water feature at the 18th Green
- Installation of clubhouse services.
Throughout the project, MJ Abbott worked closely with Jim McKenzie, Director of Golf Courses and Estate Management at the Celtic Manor Resort.
The Ryder Cup was successfully staged on the Twenty Ten Course from 1-4 October 2010, with the European Team led by Colin Montgomerie victorious, and grateful for the comprehensive drainage system installed by MJ Abbott!
