Project summary

Pitches for grass roots rugby, partially funded by the RFU

The scope of work included for the construction of one new rugby pitch and for the re-levelling and drainage of two existing pitches. MJ Abbott secured the work through competitive tender, with design and management of the tender process by sports turf consultants Total Turf Solutions.

MJ Abbott carried out the following scope of works:

New pitch

  • Removal of vegetation and strip existing topsoil over 15,000m² wasteland area
  • Cut and fill approximately 3,000m³ of material to level up plateau
  • Installation of 160mm primary land drainage system
  • Import and spread 100 tonnes of sand and ameliorate into topsoil, grade and seed
  • Carry out first year’s pitch maintenance including cutting, overseeding, fertilising, weed kill, etc.

Existing pitches

  • Spray off pitches, remove vegetation, rotovate and re-grade topsoil to form even surface
  • Installation of 4,000 linear metres of primary piped drainage and installation of forced sand slitting at 1 metre centres across the entire plateau
  • Import and spread 330 tonnes of sand and ameliorate into topsoil, grade and seed
  • Carry out first year’s pitch maintenance as above.
